Why we supply a stainless steel, Immersion Wort Chiller with the Keg River Brewer
When preparing the beer for the yeast there are several things needed, to ensure a good wort for the yeast:
1. Quick chilling to avoid the creation of DMS (dimethylsulfide)
2. Control to dial in the right pitching temp
3. Clear the wort to ensure to have a clean end product
4. Minimize or eliminate any potential contamination
A plate chiller really only does one of the above, chill the wort quickly.
Stainless Steel Immersion Chillers
Advantages:
- Why Stainless Steel, the gold standard of brewing equipment
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Easy to keep clean
- Very rigid and will last a lifetime with proper care, Copper is not as rigid as Stainless Steel
- No oxide to contend with every time you use it
- A copper chiller goes in dull and comes out shinier this is not good, when its dull it has contaminates on it and those contaminates have gone some where (ie in your brew)
- Copper is better at thermal transfer, but stainless is also pretty good
- Copper can develop a green-blue toxic oxide called Verdigris (i.e. the natural patina on the Statue of Liberty). Verdigris is water soluble and can contaminate your brew if left on your chiller before immersing
